BERKELEY - Nine Golden Bears moved on to the next round of their various singles flights on the first day of the Cal Nike Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. In Gold Flight action, top-seeded and fifth-ranked Zsofi Susanyi led a contingent of five Bears who advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals, while two Cal pairs reached the semifinals in Gold Flight doubles.
Susanyi, a sophomore who had a first-round bye, topped Danielle Flores of Saint Mary's, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round and will face freshman teammate Lynn Chi in the quarterfinals. Chi defeated Minnesota's Doron Muravnik in the first round, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, and Nevada's Michel Okhrechuk, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, in the second round.
Cal junior and 22nd-ranked Anett Schutting, senior and 31st-ranked Tayler Davis, and senior and 42nd-ranked Annie Goransson did not lose a set en route to the Gold Flight quarterfinals. Schutting, the second seed, made quick work of Fresno State's Olga Kirpicheva, 6-0, 6-1, and Arizona State's Joanna Smith, 6-1, 6-0, to advance. Third-seeded Davis beat BYU's Morgan Anderson, 6-3, 6-4, and Fresno State's Aishwarya Agrawal, 4-1 ret. (inj.). Goransson, the fifth seed, defeated Sacramento State's Sophie Lohscheidt, 6-2, 6-1, and Fresno State's Melissa McQueen, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, the third-ranked and top-seeded pair of Schutting and Goransson beat Fresno State's McQueen and Kirpicheva, 8-4, and the duo of freshman Klara Fabikova and Chi bested Sacramento State's Jennifer Nguyen and Rebecca Delgado, 9-8(5), to get to the semifinals.
In Blue Flight singles, Cal sophomore Cecilia Estlander and junior Kelly Chui advanced to the quarterfinals. Estlander, the top seed in the Blue Flight, won in straight sets over a pair of local players in Hanah Lijekvist of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-1, and San Francisco's Sofia Holmberg, 6-1, 6-1. Chui knocked off another Don in Yurie Hashiguchi, 6-0, 6-1, and got past Fresno State's Anne Susdorf, 6-0, 7-6(5).
The fourth-seeded pair of Estlander and Chui surpassed Nevada's Caroline Konigsfeldt and Sheila Smiley, 8-4, in Blue Flight doubles to reach the quarterfinals, while the top-seeded team of Davis and sophomore Laura Posylkin earned a bye into the quarters.
Posylkin beat Santa Clara's Charlotte Newell, 6-3, 6-3, and Saint Mary's Melissa Arthur, 6-1, 6-3, to reach the White Flight singles semis.
The second day of the Cal Nike Invitational begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. with action at Hellman and Channing. Admission is free to the public.
