BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Golden Bear field hockey squad returned to winning form on Sunday, defeating the Missouri State Bears, 5-2. Junior forward Jordan O'Reilly paced the Bears with two goals on the day.
After losing their previous two contests, California was hungry for a win. In that fashion, it only took Cal eight minutes to find the cage when senior midfielder Kendra Bills found O'Reilly for her first goal of the day. Only seven minutes later, senior forward Claire Dougherty beat the defense to score her first goal of the season. Missouri State was able to answer with a goal of their own soon after, but the Golden Bears scored twice more in the half to pad their lead. O'Reilly got her second goal off a nice feed from freshman forward Nicole Wallstedt, and a few minutes later Wallstedt got her own goal off a feed from senior forward Rachelle Comeau.
Cal scored one more time in the second half when a penalty corner injected by senior defender Laura Spellman and stopped by senior defender Deanna Kennedy was struck to the cage by sophomore midfielder Lara Kruggel for her team leading eighth goal of the season. Missouri State converted a penalty stroke for their second goal of the day.
Cal now gets a bit of a rest. They next play at home against the Stanford Cardinal at noon on Friday, Sep. 28.
