SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Sophomore Kelsey Santisteban placed ninth overall to lead the California women's cross country team to an eighth place finish, while the men placed ninth overall in the Pac-12 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships Saturday morning.
Santisteban ran the women's 6000-meter race in 20:30 to pace the Cal women, while freshman Matt Carpowich completed the men's 8000-meter race in 24:26 to lead the Cal men in Saturday's event, held at Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, Calif.
The women placed eighth with 209 points, while Oregon took the conference title with 47 points. The men finished ninth overall with 234 points with Colorado taking home the league crown with 49 points.
The freshman pair of Xochitl Navarette and Mariel Mendoza finished 42nd and 48th, respectively as Navarrete completed the event in a time of 21:44 and Mendoza recorded a time of 21:51. Senior Hillary Hayes placed 54th overall with a time of 22:02 and junior Elisa Karhu was two spots behind her teammate in 56th with a time of 22:08 to place
Senior Simon Schmidt was the first Golden Bear behind Carpowich with a time of 24:49 to place 45th overall on the men's side. Junior Chris Walden and freshman Leland Later ran together for most of the race, with Walden clocking a time of 25:04 to place 48th and Later recording a time of 25:07 to place 51st. Sophomore Jordan Locklear was four spots behind in 55th with a time of 25:23.
The conference championships will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with the event set to air several times in the first week of November, including Nov. 5 at 6 p.m., Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., Nov. 7 at 11 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. All times listed are pacific.
Next up for several Bears is the Doc Adams Invitational in Davis. Calif. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A select group of Golden Bears will compete in the NCAA West Regionals in Seattle, Wash. on Friday, Nov. 9.
