Jan. 26, 2013

SEATTLE, Wash. - Chioma Amaechi smashed the Cal record in the women's weight throw by nearly four feet and later claimed first in the shot put competition, while Taylor Kientzel swept the men's long jump and triple jump as the Golden Bears wrapped of their second indoor meet of the season at the UW Invitational.

All told, Cal captured six separate events on Saturday. In addition to Amaechi and Kientzel. Derek While won the men's weight throw and Jordan Locklear prevailed in the mile.

Amaechi, who set a PR of 60-3.00 in the weight throw just last weekend at the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., topped that mark on her fourth attempt with a throw of 63-4.00, which edged the previous school record of 63-3.25 set by Linda Oseso last year. Then on her fifth try, Amaechi uncorked a throw of 67-2.00 to easily win the event over Irene Kujore of UC Santa Barbara, who was the runner-up at 63-10.25.

Amaechi established another personal best with a winning effort of 52-6.50 in the shot put, improving by more than two feet from a mark of 49-10.00 she set last weekend. The result shot her up to fourth on Cal's all-time performer list. Runner-up Victoria Owers also reached the Bears' top 10. With her distance of 51-7.00, the freshman now stands fifth in school history in the event.

Kientzel came from behind to win the long jump. Down by three-quarters of an inch entering his sixth and final attempt, he leapt 24-5.75 to not only secure first place, but beat his previous lifetime best by nearly a full foot. Teammate Jonte Grant took third at 23-4.50 with Chase Wheeler fourth at 23-0.75.

In the triple jump. Kientzel used his fifth attempt to take the lead, soaring to 50-10.75 to set his second PR of the day. His mark nipped UC Riverside's Ryan Swafford by a mere 1.25 inches. As in the long jump, Bears also finished third and fourth with Grant going 48-6.00 and Chad Jones 48-3.50.

White won the men's weight throw with an effort of 62-4.00, which came on his final try. The effort pushed him ahead of fellow Bear Chijoke Nwuzi, who settled for second at 61-3.50 despite a more than two-foot improvement on personal best.

In the mile run, Jordan Locklear and Chris Walden placed 1-2, with Locklear crossing in 4:08.11 and Walden right behind in 4:08.13. Matt Carpowich competed in the invitational mile and took 11th in 4:07.90.

Dash Oliver twice lowered his PR. After being timed in 6.86 during the preliminary heats, he came through the finish in 6.85 seconds in the final, which was good for fifth place.

Ray Stewart placed second in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.89 seconds, trailing only Oregon's Johnathan Cabral, who set a meet record of 7.75. Alima Kamara also took runner-up in honors in the women's invitational 400 meters in 55.65.

Cal takes a week off from competition before getting back in action at the Don Kirby Invitational Feb. 8 in Albuquerque and the Flotrack Husky Classic Feb. 8-9 in Seattle.
