Next Cal Game: Friday at Arizona State
SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 15 Golden Bears gave the Utes a taste of the Golden State by defeating Utah 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Not only were California's three goals the most Utah had allowed all year but the Utes had not given up more than one goal at home all year prior to Sunday's match.
Coming into the game as evidence to the power of the Pac, the decision was up for grabs as the Utes - though losing 1-0 to No. 2 Stanford on Friday - had limited the Cardinal to its fewest goals in Pac-12 play, which is no easy feat. However, the Bears earned a 1-0 first-half lead before tacking on two second-half goals. The Utes avoided the shutout with a goal in the 87th minute.
Cal ups its overall winning streak to five and its Pac-2 streak to four games. The four straight conference victories are the most since 2007. The Bears finished its road swing of the second-year conference opponents with a pristine 2-0 record.
For the first time since Sept. 7 - a span in which the Bears went 6-1 - Cal was outshot by its opponent. The Utes tallied 17 shots to Cal's 12. The Utes put the pressure on Cal keeper Emily Kruger, who was credited with 10 saves in 90 minutes of play. Utah goalie Lindsey Luke made four stops but allowed three goals.
