MORAGA, Calif. - California freshmen Klara Fabikova and Lynn Chi moved on in both doubles and singles in the top flight on a rainy Friday at the Saint Mary's Invitational, held at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's campus and at the Moraga Country Club.
On the first day of the tournament, the second-seeded pair of Fabikova-Chi beat Cal Poly's Jennifer Cornea-Louise Oxnevad, 8-3, in the round of 16 and then topped Catherine Isip and Hannah Liljekvist of Saint Mary's, 8-3, in the quarterfinals of the Red Flight doubles main draw. Also in Red Doubles, Cal junior Kelly Chui and sophomore Cecilia Estlander knocked off Sacramento State's Jennifer Nguyen-Katharina Knoebl, 8-2, in the round of 16, before falling to Gaels Danielle Flores and Jade Frampton, 8-6, in the quarterfinals.
In the Red Singles round of 32, third-seeded Fabikova - ranked No. 2 on the ITA's preseason list of the top freshmen/newcomers in the nation - beat Washington's Capucine Gregoire, 6-4, 6-4; Cal junior Alice Duranteau - who won the White Singles title at this event last season - defeated San Jose State's Margot Charron, 6-1, 6-0; fourth-seeded Chi topped San Francisco's Milica Hadzi-Tanovic, 6-4, 6-0; and sixth-seeded Estlander fell to San Jose State's Sabastiani Leon Chao, 6-3, 6-4.
Duranteau teamed with sophomore Laura Posylkin to earn a spot in the White Doubles semifinals. The second-seeded Bears beat Sacramento State's Saskia Angerer-Siobhan Ryan-Bovey, 8-4, in the round of 16 and then topped Cal Poly's Gabrielle Gatewood-Kathryn Webb, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
In the White Singles round of 32, Chui lost just one game in a victory over Gonzaga's Sissi Koehler, 6-1, 6-0, while Posylkin beat San Francisco's Yurie Hashiguchi in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
The three-day invitational continues on Saturday.
