IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team won both of its matches Sunday to claim fifth place at the prestigious UC Irvine Invitational.
The Bears (12-2) began the day by getting past No. 8 Hawaii, 10-6. The match was tied at 6-6 at the end of the third quarter when Cal exploded for four goals in the final period to notch the victory. Senior All-American Emily Csikos led the Bears with four goals while sophomore Tiera Schroeder and senior Breda Vosters added two apiece. Senior Dana Ochsner and freshman Pippa Saunders also scored for Cal. Goalie Savanna Smith made six saves.
In the Fifth Place Game, the Bears edged No. 7 San Diego State, 8-6. The match was tied at 2-2 at halftime before Cal scored four goals in the third period. The Aztecs scored four goals in the second half but the Bears held on. Csikos once again had four goals and Vosters had two. Junior Ashley Young and Saunders scored one goal apiece. Smith made seven saves.
Csikos had 11 goals total during the tournament, in which the Bears went 3-1 over the two days.
Cal returns to the pool Saturday for its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at the Spieker Aquatics Complex against No. 2 USC, which defeated No. 1 Stanford in the championship match of the UC Invitational on Sunday. It will mark just the second home match of the season for the Bears. There will be a special pre-match ceremony to retire the cap of former Cal All-American Heather Petri, a four-time Olympian who helped the United States win the Gold Medal last summer in London.
