BERKELEY - Junior Jaci Powell stands in second place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the 17th Cal Multis being held at Edwards Stadium. The two-day event wraps up with action in the heptathlon and decathlon Thursday.
Powell's total of 3,021 points is just behind leader Jordan Andreassen of Iowa State, who has 3,032 points. Powell placed first in two of the four events - the 100-meter hurdles and the 200 meters - and was second with a PR effort in the shot put and tied for fifth in the high jump. The long jump, javelin and 800 meters will take place Thursday.
In all, there are 19 heptathletes in the field, while 12 competitors are in the decathlon, led by USC's Viktor Fajoyomi, with 3,943 points.
Powell, who captured a pair of state junior college championships at Golden West College, got out of the blocks fast in the 100-meter hurdles when she was timed in 14.51. She then cleared 5-2.25 in the high jump before recording her distance of 35-10.00 in the shot put. Powell concluded the afternoon with a time of 25.83 in the 200 meters despite running into a headwind of 2.3 meters per second (5.1 mpg).
Though Powell is the only Golden Bear at the Cal Multis, she will not be alone in action this week. A group of 14 Cal athletes will be in Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays, while other members of the squad will compete at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational over the weekend.
