Head Coach Dave O'Neill recaps he Bears' first day at the Pac-12 Challenge.

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Second-ranked California women's crew opened the season with impressive performances in victories over Oklahoma and Clemson Saturday at the Pac-12 Challenge at Redwood Shores.

The Golden Bears secured victories in all nine of their races on the day, including four against Oklahoma and No. 17 Clemson and one against Stanford.

"It was a good day overall," said Cal head women's crew coach Dave O'Neill. "We had a number of races and we won all of them. "It was a good test for us and a good first run through to see where we are. It is clear that we are doing ok and I is also clear we have a lot o work on. As far as the first day of the season goes, it was good, but we know we can do better."

Cal's varsity eight opened the day's competition with a victory over Oklahoma. The Golden Bears raced through the 2,000-meter course at Redwood Shores in 6:29.8, defeating the Sooners (6:43.0) by more than 13 seconds.

Cal's novice eight posted a 15-second victory over Clemson's boat, with a time of 6:41.0 to Clemson's 6:56.1.

"Seeing teams from other regions and other conferences is going to be really important," O'Neill said. "We think of the Pac-12 conference as one of the strongest conferences in the country. Going up against an ACC school like Clemson and doing well against them and a Conference-USA school like Oklahoma; that is going to do well for us when NCAA selections come around. The strength of our conference will go a long way."

The Bears completed the busy day of racing with a matchup against Stanford in the novice eight. The second novice eight defeated the Cardinal with a time of 6:53.0 to Stanford's 6:56.4.

Cal continues action at Redwood Shores on Sunday (March 31) with a matchup against Northeastern, beginning at 9 a.m.

"It looks like Northeastern is doing well," O'Neill said. "We will change some lineups around tomorrow and will look to improve upon things we did today."
