SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A Sacramento State-record crowd watched the No. 5/4 Golden Bears defeat the Hornets 1-0 Saturday, as Cal notched its 27th win of the season in front of 1,212 at Shea Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
The hits came few and far between for both teams, but both pitchers were near-flawless in their execution, pitching a combined 25 strikeouts. Senior hurler Jolene Henderson (23-2) tossed the complete game, setting a new season-high total of 14 fanned batters without allowing a walk and only two hits. Sac State's Caitlin Brooks (9-4) also limited the Bears to two hits while offering up three walks with 10 strikeouts.
Sophomore Cheyenne Cordes and junior Victoria Jones each had one hit, with Jones scoring the game's only run with a solo shot to left field at the top of the fifth. Cal left five runners on base, including a bases loaded situation at the top of the sixth that ended with a strikeout.
The Bears continue their four-game road stretch with a series at Arizona, beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. Cal closes out the Arizona series Wednesday at noon.
