Final Results

SAN DIEGO - No. 2 California women's crew placed second in the varsity eight grand final in the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday in Mission Bay in San Diego.

In the varsity eight grand final for the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the Golden Bears raced down the 2,000-meter course in 6:28.04, but were edged by No. 6 USC (6:25.30) in a race decided by less than three seconds. Virginia (6:28.71) placed third, while UCLA (6:30.25) was fourth, Washington (6:33.33) placed fifth and Duke (6:41.23) finished sixth.

"We had a pretty good day as a team, and I'm proud of the effort everyone gave," said Cal head women's crew coach Dave O'Neill. "The top two eights both had good races, but USC was really strong. I think we're in good place for his point in the season, but we have a lot of work to do. The novice eight came out on the short end of a hard fought race, and it was nice win in the open eight. Overall, I'm pleased with the results and looking forward to what's ahead."

USC claimed the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy in the second varsity eight, edging Cal by five seconds in the grand final. The Trojans posted a time of 6:32.41, just ahead of the Bears' finishing time of 6:37.43. Washington (6:38.04) finished third, Virginia (6:38.88) placed fourth, UCLA (6:39.03) was fifth and Wisconsin (6:45.31) finished sixth in the race.

In one of the closest races of the San Diego Crew Classic, Washington's novice eight narrowly defeated Cal. The race was decided by less than a second with the Huskies posting a winning time of 6:54.80 to the Bears' time of 6:54.96. UCLA (7:05.42) finished third, with Virginia (7:07.69) placing fourth, KSU (7:10.14) fifth and Minnesota (7:10.79) placing sixth.

Cal took home the Carley Copley Cup in the open eight with a time of 6:52.40, winning by more than 19 seconds. UCLA placed second with a time of 7:11.53.

Cal returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21 at the Lake Natoma Invitational on Gold River. For all the latest news on the Bears, you can follow them on Twitter at the handle @CalWCrew.
