BERKELEY - In the semifinal game of the NorPac Tournament, the University of California Golden Bear field hockey team (7-12) saw their season come to an end on Friday, losing to the Stanford Cardinal, 6-2. It was the third time this season the Bears have fallen short to Stanford. Sophomore midfielder Lara Kruggel scored a goal and earned an assist in the loss.

Cal kept it close early, and played Stanford for 22 minutes of scoreless hockey. Stanford broke through when Hope Burke scored off of a penalty corner. They added a second goal to bring the score to 2-0 at the break.

The Cardinal broke it open in the second half, scoring two goals in the first 12 minutes. The Golden Bears then pulled goalie Joelle van Hoorn, and Stanford got a fifth goal with an empty net. California battled back, with Kruggel passing to juniot midfielder Shannon Elmitt off of a penalty corner for her second goal of the season. Stanford got the goal right back with another open net score. Finally, with just five minutes remaining, Kruggel scored her team leading 16th goal of the season on a nice shot from the left side of the arc. Unfortunately, it was too little too late, as the final horn sounded with the score, 6-2.
