EUGENE, Ore. - Christoffer Konigsfeldt won his singles match in three sets to clinch No. 21 California's eventual 4-3 victory over No. 44 Oregon on Friday at the UO Student Tennis Center. The Golden Bears improved their record to 9-8 (1-1 in the Pac-12), while the Ducks now stand at 14-4 (1-2 Pac-12).
Konigsfeldt, a senior co-captain ranked 66th nationally, defeated Daan Maasland, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, on court three to secure the overall win with the score at 4-1. The Ducks won the final two matches.
Cal began the contest with sophomores Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton beating Alex Rovello and Maasland, 8-6, in court-three doubles. But the Ducks tied matters when Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen beat the Bears' 24th-ranked pair of Konigsfeldt and junior Campbell Johnson, 8-6, on court one. The 40th-ranked duo of freshman Mads Engsted and junior Ben McLachlan came through for the Bears on court two, besting Daniel Sardu and Aaron Clissold, 8-3, to wrap up the doubles point.
In singles, Cal won on the first three courts to notch the team victory. Johnson, ranked 46th, started off with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Mullen on court two, and McLachlan, ranked 44th, followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, triumph on court one over Cambier to make the score 3-0 overall.
Cal's Engsted fell to Sardu, 7-6(3), 6-4, on court five to make the score 3-1 and temporarily stave off the Bears' march to victory. But Konigsfeldt took care of that with his success on court three.
On court four, Bayane took Oregon's Rovello to three sets before dropping his match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and on court six, freshman Wyatt Houghton retired from his match with Lova Randriamampandry with the score at 1-6, 6-4, 5-5, to wrap up the match at 4-3.
"We played well in the doubles today," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "We were cruising in the singles, but we got a little ahead of ourselves and ended up splitting sets on four courts. Ben McLachlan, Campbell Johnson and Chris Konigsfeldt led the way with wins at the top of the lineup. We played well at the big moments today, but next time we've got to do a better job of holding the lead."
Cal next plays at Washington on Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. in Seattle.
