MORAGA, Calif. - California won four titles on Sunday at the Saint Mary's Invitational, with fourth-seeded Lynn Chi beating third-seeded teammate Klara Fabikova, 6-4, 6-3, for the Red Singles crown, Kelly Chui claiming the White Singles championship and the Golden Bears taking two titles in doubles.
Chui knocked off Sacramento State's Katharina Knoebl in her final, 6-1, 6-4.
Second-seeded Fabikova and Chi teamed up to win the Red Doubles final - dominating Jade Frampton-Danielle Flores of Saint Mary's, 8-1 - while second-seeded Alice Duranteau and Laura Posylkin captured the White Doubles title with an 8-5 victory over San Francisco's Marina Nikolic-Melinda Akerbrant.
"We've always done well at this tournament but I don't know that we've swept all of the major titles before," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Doing this well in singles and doubles and putting three of four semifinalists in the top flight singles semifinals speaks volumes.
"For someone like Alice winning the White singles title last year and making the semis of the top flight this year, that shows how much she's improved her play, her fitness and in everything. We had two freshmen playing each other in the top flight singles final in Lynn and Klara. [Former Cal NCAA champion] Jana Juricova won this tournament as a freshman and [senior] Annie Goransson won this tournament as a sophomore. Pretty good players who have won this tournament have gone on to pretty good careers at Cal. It was a good weekend and a great day to have the Cal appearing in the majority of the final matches."
The three-day invitational - held at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's campus and at the Moraga Country Club - ended on Sunday.
