BERKELEY - The California field hockey team (3-5, 0-1 NorPac) was defeated by one goal by the Stanford Cardinal (7-4, 1-0 NorPac), 2-1. Jordan O'Reilly scored the lone goal for the Golden Bears.
After both teams scored in the beginning of the first half, Stanford found the cage with just 13 seconds left in the game. A cross from the right side of the arc deflected off of Cal goalie Courtney Hendrickson, hit a post, and landed right at Stanford forward Courtney Haldeman's stick. She pushed it in, and Cal could not get to the attacking end quick enough for an equalizer.
It was a very close, hotly contested match. Both teams had trouble getting the ball inside the arc, with Stanford taking nine shots, and Cal just five. There were even fewer corners, with the Bears earning one, and the Cardinal only getting two.
"It was a really close game," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "It was a good game of hockey. We didn't do what we could have done. We needed more opportunities inside the arc."
Cal struck first in the match, when Lara Kruggel's shot rebounded of the Stanford goalie right to the waiting stick of Jordan O'Reilly. She pushed it across the line for her fourth goal of the season. The lead was short lived when just three minutes later Stanford scored their goal in the same fashion.
Cal will next take to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 30 when they travel to play the UC Davis Aggies on the road at 12 p.m.
