STANFORD, Calif. - The California men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up competition in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning with the women finishing ninth as a team and the men placing 14th overall.
The host Cardinal placed first in both the men's and women's races out of more than 15 schools in each event.
Junior Elisa Karhu paced the Cal women with a time of 21:58 in the 6000-meter race. Sophomores Sydney Gray (22:14) and Rebecka Oberg (22:14) finished 61st and 62nd, respectively, while freshman Mariel Mendoza was right behind the pair in 66th with a time of 22:18. Sophomore Laura O'Neill completed the race in 22:38 to place 97th.
Freshman Leland Later led the Bears on the men's side, finishing 47th overall in the 8000-meter race with a time of 25:25. Senior Matt Petersen placed 61st with a time of 25:39. Freshmen Juan David Garcia (26:00) and Thomas Joyce (26:25) completed the race 86th and 125th, respectively.
Cal will take next weekend off and return to action the following weekend where several members of the squad will compete in the prestigious Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisc., and some will compete locally in the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif.
