BERKELEY - The University of California field hockey team earned its fourth shutout of the season on Friday, beating the University of the Pacific Tigers, 5-0. Sophomore midfielder Lara Kruggel scored all five goals for the Golden Bears, bringing her total to 14 on the season. The five goals are the most for any Bear this season and Kruggel's most in a game in her career.

Two other Golden Bears also had career days in the win. Senior defender Deanna Kennedy earned her 4th assist of the season and the 37th of her career, setting a new record for Golden Bear career assists. Also, junior midfielder Shannon Elmitt tallied four assists on the evening, bringing her season total to six to lead the team, and giving her 24 for her career, passing Elizabeth Harkins for seventh all time.

"It feels good to finally break one open," said Golden Bear head coach Shellie Onstead. "We finally played at a pace I was happy with in that we were the ones setting the tone. We were subbing a lot, and people were doing a great job doing different things being asked of them. But our best game is still to come."

The Bears got off to a slow start. But thanks to stellar defense from freshman goalie Joelle van Hoorn and defensive saves from sophomore midfielder Caroline Struijk and senior defender Deanna Kennedy, the Golden Bears were able to hold Pacific scoreless.

After several failed penalty corner attempts, Cal finally broke through in the 30th minute of the match. A corner injected by Kennedy and stopped by Elmitt was passed over to Kruggel on the right side of the goal. She knocked it in for her first goal of the game and only goal of the first half.

"[The goals felt] pretty good," said Kruggel. "Coach [Smith] and I had a mis-communication early in the second half, and so I played the rest of the game angry. I was on a mission."

The first of four second half goals from Kruggel came in the tenth minute of the half. Elmitt earned her second assist when she passed to Kruggel from the left side and Kruggel got her stick on it to redirect it into the goal. Two minutes later, the Bears were able to turn a broken corner into a positive. Junior defender Allie Swartz found the ball at the top of the arc and found Kruggel on the left side. Kruggel connected with a backhand from eight meters out for her third goal. With ten minutes to play, Kruggel got her fourth goal when another Elmitt pass found her in front of the cage. Finally, in the 64th minute, Kruggel finished up her scoring when Elmitt found her open once more on the right side. Another eight meter backhand finished the scoring for Cal.

Cal will next play at Pacific on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.
