BERKELEY - With 1-2 finishes in the final three results of the day, the Cal men's track & field team captured a tri-meet over Michigan and Virginia Saturday at Edwards Stadium. In the women's competition, the Golden Bears finished second behind the Wolverines despite winning eight of 19 events.

Cal surged to the front in the men's team race in the high jump with Noel Frazier and Mike Tracy grabbing top honors (both cleared 6-9.75) as the Bears outscored Michigan, 12-2, in the event to take a 137-131 edge in team points. Ethan Cochran (178-10) and Chijoke Nwuzi (174-7) extended Cal's advantage with their marks in the discus, and Chad Jones (50-7.25) and Taylor Kientzel (49-3.00) wrapped up the day with a sweep in the triple jump.

Overall, the Bears finished with 161 points to 145 for Michigan and 93 for Virginia. On the women's side, Michigan prevailed with 153 points to 142 for Cal and 86 for Virginia.

"What a thrilling traditional college scoring meet on both genders at Edwards Stadium today," Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval said. "The team rallied together as the meet seesawed back and forth. Both [Jordan] Locklear and [Tom] Blocker's double wins fueled a rally at the latter part of the meet. We were balanced with strong performances on the jumps and throws to complement the running events."

Freshman Shelby Ashe and senior Chioma Amaechi placed 1-2 in the women's hammer to open up the meet. Ashe captured the event with a season-best 191-2, which puts her fourth on Cal's all-time performer list and is just 22 inches shy of the school freshman record. In the men's hammer, Scott Esparza won with his own season-best mark, 200-6.

In the men's 1500 meters, Jordan Locklear broke off with the lead pack on the final lap, then surged ahead with about 50 meters to go to triumph in the race in a PR 3:45.14. He came back an hour later to win the 800 meters in a season-best 1:51.21.

Malaina Payton set a season best with a mark of 20-5.75 in the women's long jump. The effort came on her first attempt and makes her the No. 9 performer in the country this season.

The Bears produced several outdoor personal bests in the shot put. Chioma Amaechi won the women's event at 49-11.25 with Torie Owers second at 48-11.75; and Cochran was second in the men's competition at 56-8.75.

Ray Stewart prevailed in the hurdles with a 13.90 time, while Alima Kamara held off Virginia's Jordan Lavender to win her specialty, the women's 400 meters, in a season-best time of 53.48 that puts her sixth in the country so far this spring.

Cal swept the 100 meters with Charnell Price (11.79) taking the women's race and Tom Blocker posting a PR 10.59 to prevail in the men's. Blocker also PR'd in the 200 meters with a victorious time of 21.58.

In the men's 5000 meters, Collin Jarvis took over the lead on the final backstretch and cruised home with a winning time of 14:02.60. The quartet of Taylor Lawson, Arielle Cunningham-Stevenson, Charnell Price and Alima Kamara claimed the final women's running event in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:41.24.

Hammed Suleman posted his best legal mark of the season in the men's long jump (24-4.25), with Chase Wheeler (23-9.00) and Kientzel (23-0.75) following for a 1-2-3 Cal result.

Saturday's meet featured three of the top four public universities in the country according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings - 1. Cal, 3. Virginia and 4. Michigan - and coaches expect the triangular competition to become a regular event between the schools.

The Bears take a break from action next week to prepare for the April 20 Big Meet at Stanford. Cal's final home action will be the Brutus Hamilton Invitational April 26-27.
