FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - California's 22nd-ranked Anett Schutting and fifth-ranked Zsofi Susanyi both won their round of 32 matches on the first day of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center.

Schutting knocked off a familiar face - Kansas State's No. 14 Petra Niedermayerova - 6-4, 7-5, in the first round, setting up a round of 16 match against USC's 11th-ranked Danielle Lao on Friday. Nidermayerova beat Schutting in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in October.

Susanyi, meanwhile, made quick work of Penn State's No. 52 Petra Januskova, 6-1, 6-0. The sophomore will battle top-seeded and sixth-ranked Lauren Embree of Florida on Friday.
