STOCKTON - Sophomore Tiera Schroeder notched three goals and senior Emily Csikos scored a goal in her return as the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team opened the 2013 season with a 14-4 victory at Pacific on Saturday.
"For an early-season nonconference game, I thought we played well," Cal coach Richard Corso said. "I was happy with our team defense. It was a successful outing and I was happy to have this opportunity to come here."
Vosters, the team's leading scorer in each of the past two seasons, scored the first goal of 2013 with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. Schroeder, who was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Newcomer Team last year, made it 2-0 with a goal with 2:23 left in the first.
After leading 6-3 at halftime, Young scored two goals and Ochsner added another to extend the advantage to 9-3 and put the Bears comfortably in control.
Csikos, a three-time All-American who sat out last year to train with the Canadian National Team, scored her goal in the second quarter.
"She's having a lot of fun," Corso said. "Her teammates are really enjoying having her on the team. She's a coach in the water. Everything she does, people take notice."
"At this point, there's no need to over-play our older players," Corso said. "The great thing is we have the opportunity to play our younger kids and get them big minutes. It's valuable time to get them ready for conference."
Goalie Savanna Smith recorded five saves for the Bears.
Cal returns to the water for its home opener Saturday, Jan. 26 against Michigan at 6 p.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
