RENO, Nev. - The No. 15 California women's soccer team closed its nonconference slate in high-scoring fashion - defeating Nevada 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Wolf Pack's Mackay Stadium. The Golden Bears benefitted from a Nevada first-half own goal before scoring twice more in the second 45.

Sunday's match was especially important for the Bears, who dropped a 2-1 decision to Arizona on Friday in the Pac-12 opener. In that game and playing with only 10 Bears, Cal battled back from a 1-0 deficit to knot things at 1-1 before the Wildcats scored the gamewinner. Not only did the Bears rebound with a victory on Sunday, they also shut out the Wolf Pack to improve to 7-3-0 overall.

"It was the most important game of our season thus far," Lauren Battungsaid. "It was an opportunity to bounce back and reestablish a new rhythm and momentum to carry us through the rest of the season. We took advantage of the opportrunity and hopefully we can continue to play like we know we can, one game at a time."

Lauren Heinimproved to 1-1-0 with three stops in 90 minutes of play between the posts. UNR keeper Dana Moreno made five saves but allowed all three goals. Cal outshot Nevada 18-6.

"After the tough loss in our first conference game, this win builds back our confidence and puts us back on the right track in order to make a statement in the Pac-12," Onumonu said.

44:56 - Cal 1, Nevada 0:

Sam Walker threw the ball in and Mekenna DeBack and Kory Lametfought for the ball. Lamet fired off a shot in a spare second of free space and it ricocheted off the nearest defender and past the goalie on the near post.

56:32 - Cal 2, Nevada 0:

Kory Lametcrossed the ball in, and Onumonu one touched the ball into the right corner.

"My assist came from a good simple ball from Lauren down the right side," Lamet said. "I took a touch and served a ball to Ife at the back post and she headed it in! This win is huge for us. Having to bounce back from a tough loss on Friday isn't easy and we needed this win.

58:30 - Cal 3, Nevada 0:

Lauren Battungdished the ball to Fitzpatrick, who shot the ball past the keeper from 10 yards out.

"I was about 15 yards out and LB drew in two defenders, and I was calling for the ball back from her and she waited until the right time to lay it back," Fitzpatrick said. "I curved it with the inside of my foot to the left upper corner from the right side of the box. It was an amazing feeling! Everyone played with heart and were really proud of each other."

Next Time on the Pitch:

Cal continues conference play with two matches against the Oregon schools in Berkeley. The Bears welcome Oregon on Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. in a Pac-12 Networks game. The Pac-12 Networks will also broadcast the Sept. 30 game against Oregon State, which is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
